The Foster Grandparent
Program is the only program in
The goal of the Foster
Grandparent Program, sponsored by FOCUS, is to place low-income seniors in
schools and other non-profit agencies for an average of four hours a day, to
assist a few special children. They
teach basic skills such as tying shoes, letter sounds, reading, and math and
also serve as mentors. In return the
volunteers receive a non-taxable stipend, assistance with the cost of a meal,
transportation for those who no longer drive, and other benefits, especially
the wonderful feeling of being needed and loved.
In the school year
2005-2006, fifty-nine Foster Grandparents contributed 32,455 hours of their
time and love to special needs children at eighteen different locations in
Evidence of the worthiness
of the program is shown when a teacher writes, “Thank you for sending such a wonderful
person (Foster Grandparent) to help our children.”
