The Foster Grandparent Program is the only program in Tuscaloosa County that benefits both the older person with time and love to share and special needs children.

The goal of the Foster Grandparent Program, sponsored by FOCUS, is to place low-income seniors in schools and other non-profit agencies for an average of four hours a day, to assist a few special children.  They teach basic skills such as tying shoes, letter sounds, reading, and math and also serve as mentors.  In return the volunteers receive a non-taxable stipend, assistance with the cost of a meal, transportation for those who no longer drive, and other benefits, especially the wonderful feeling of being needed and loved.

In the school year 2005-2006, fifty-nine Foster Grandparents contributed 32,455 hours of their time and love to special needs children at eighteen different locations in Tuscaloosa County.

Evidence of the worthiness of the program is shown when a teacher writes, “Thank you for sending such a wonderful person (Foster Grandparent) to help our children.”
