The Foster Grandparent Program of Mobile
County has a twenty-six year history of providing volunteer opportunities for
low- income seniors to serve as positive role models for children with special
and or exceptional needs. Over 90
dependable, caring adults have become a vital community resource in helping 53
community partners improve and strengthen capacities to meet community
needs. Thousands of children are strengthened
academically, socially, and developmentally through the services of Foster
Grandparents. Volunteers will provided
approximately 93,960 service hours during this program year.
The Mobile County Public School System is
the program's largest volunteer site.
Fifty-three volunteers offer services to 23 schools ranging from K
through 12. During this program year 7
volunteers participated in a special project to provide finance and support to the Assistance League of Mobile (a
group of retired educators) to help prepare school supply packs for
approximately 4,000 students identified as needing materials for a successful
school year.
The Head Start program, local day cares, USA
Children's and Women’s Hospital, St. Mary’s Emergency Shelter, and the Boys and
Girls Clubs of Mobile are also served by Foster Grandparent volunteers. Many of our host sites reveal that children
and youth helped by Foster Grandparents gain self-esteem and confidence to
become productive members of our society.
