EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The Alabama Association of Retired and Senior Volunteer Program, Inc.  (AARSVP, Inc) is composed of Retired Senior Volunteer Programs (RSVP), Foster Grandparent Program (FGP) and Senior Companion Programs (SCP), across the State of Alabama. The goal of these program is to involve seniors, aged 55 and older, in meaningful activities to meet the needs in the areas of Education, Economic Development, Public Safety, Human Services, the Environment, Health and Nutrition and other community needs.

Since 1981, AARSVP, Inc. state funding has been a collaborate effort between AARSVP, Inc. projects and the State of Alabama. AARSVP, Inc. directors initiated contact with Alabama Legislators, discussed the needs of the local communities and projects, and drafted a proposal that addressed how senior volunteer programs could utilize state funding in meeting the community needs across the state of Alabama.

State of Alabama funds are used to support the direct services and efforts of Senior Volunteers at Non-Profit, State and local agencies called Volunteer Stations. Direct expenses included Volunteer Insurance, Volunteer Transportation, Volunteer Coordinators and Volunteer Recognition. While Directors manage the overall operations of the programs, coordinators manage the general recruitment, assignments, coordination of volunteer activities. The Corporation for National Service (Federal Supporting Agency) mandates that all volunteers be covered by accident, liability and secondary auto liability insurance while performing volunteers activities. Annual recognition of volunteers highlights the many accomplishments of the individual volunteer across the state.

The original mission of AARSVP, Inc. was to utilize the talents, skills, and knowledge of seniors and retirees, age 55 and over.  This has evolved into AARSVP, Inc. becoming the largest service organization of non-profit agencies in the state. AARSVP, Inc. programs match the interests and skills of older Alabamians with the opportunities to help meet community needs. AARSVP, Inc. encourages seniors to be of service to their communities through volunteer activities with the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program, Foster Grandparent Program or Senior Companion Program.

Impact service areas included: strong statewide emphasis on tutoring students in grades K-3 to improve reading skills, mentoring troubled youth; crime prevention/awareness through TRIAD and neighbor watch, working in partnership with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children toward prevention of crimes against children; free tax preparation and electronic filing of federal and state income taxes for the elderly, handicapped, low income, and other individuals; assisting needy, homeless, and/or abused and neglected children; providing in-home assistance, respite care, and companionship to frail, elderly, homebound persons to prevent or postpone their institutionalization.

In 2007 more than 12,000 seniors in Alabama contribute their time and talents in one of three Senior Corps program to provide over 2 million volunteer hours. Foster Grandparents serve one-on-one as tutors and mentors to more than 1,400 young people who have special needs. Senior Companions help more than 780 homebound seniors and other adults maintain independence in their own homes. Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) volunteers conduct safety patrols for local police departments, participate in environmental projects, tutor and  mentor youth, respond to natural disasters, and provide other services through more than 1,500 groups across Alabama.
